Everything in life that’s worth doing requires a plan.
Why should your finances be any different?
The challenge: You’re busy living your life. You know that there is a whole universe of financial concerns to take care of, but even thinking about your financial life feels like a chore. Enter Montoya Wealth Management, an investment advisor that’s also a fee-only financial planner.
The solution: When our clients sit down with us, our first step is to take a full financial history to write a prioritized financial plan. From there, we create a road map to implementing them in order of priority. For some of our clients, that has meant diving into retirement planning, getting their estate planning into shape or purchasing life insurance from one of our trusted partners, first thing. For others, the right place to start is an easy-to-follow budget and debt management plan. It’s rarely the same for anyone. Nor should it be.
The result: Peace of mind. When clients know that they have a financial advisor looking around corners for them, they can focus on other parts of their lives.
The six key value propositions our financial planning provides
Organization
We will help bring order to your financial life, by assisting you in getting your financial house in order (at both the “macro” level of investments, insurance, estate, taxes, etc., and also the “micro” level of household cash flow).
Accountability
We will help you follow through on financial commitments, by working with you to prioritize your goals, show you the steps you need to take, and regularly review your progress towards achieving them.
Objectivity
We bring insight from the outside to help you avoid emotionally driven decisions in important money matters, by being available to consult with you at key moments of decision-making, doing the research necessary to ensure you have all the information, and managing and disclosing any of our own potential conflicts of interest.
Proactivity
We work with you to anticipate your life transitions and to be financially prepared for them, by regularly assessing any potential life transitions that might be coming, and creating the action plan necessary to address and manage them ahead of time.
Education
We will explore what specific knowledge will be needed to succeed in your situation, by first thoroughly understanding your situation, then providing the necessary resources to facilitate your decisions, and explaining the options and risks associated with each choice.
Partnership
We attempt to help you achieve the best life possible but will work in concert with you, not just for you, to make this possible, by taking the time to clearly understand your background, philosophy, needs and objectives,

A little more about the planning we do
Budgeting & debt management
Budgeting is about having a set of mechanisms to align your spending habits to your goals, wants, needs and dreams.
Done right, you feel abundant and at peace.
We will look at your debt picture, your spending personality, cash flow, and emergency funding, and then create a budget and implementation strategy that works just right for you. All of our work is done in bite-sized pieces so you never feel overwhelmed.
Asset allocation & investment analysis
Bring your statements in, and we will have a look, but not just at your asset allocation, but at you: Your risk tolerance, time horizon, investment style, as well as the long- and short-term goals for your assets. We will also look at the hidden costs and tax efficiencies of your current investments.
From there, we will offer an investment plan with appropriate asset allocations and investment strategy for each of your financial goals.
Tax planning & strategy
Investing is fine, but do you have a tax strategy? We will look at your current tax picture and offer tax minimization and deferral strategies for retirement funds, 401ks, and college savings. This may include recommendations on Roth conversions, backdoor Roth conversions for high earners, and strategies for retiring early using your retirement funds without penalty.
Estate Planning
Working together, we go through an estate planning checklist to ensure basic estate planning moves are in place and to identify gaps, such as missing beneficiaries on your bank and investment accounts or a house that is currently set to go to probate if you pass away.
We also offer, in coordination with attorneys and document preparers, estate documents such as trusts, wills, and powers of attorney. The process is easy, inexpensive, and can do wonders for your peace of mind. Learn more.
The list goes on…
Social security planning
If you are starting to think about social security but want to be sure you’re taking it at the right time, we can help.
Home and other large-purchase planning
We can help you come up with a strategy to fund that large purchase.
Education funding
Do you need to plan for college for a child or grandchild? Education strategies go way beyond saving enough money.
Windfall planning
if you have received a recent inheritance or settlement and are worried about how to manage it, we can help.
